Phelps Insignia: The 2008 Cabernet Sauvignon Insignia is a towering, statuesque wine bursting with blackberry jam, tar, spices, leather and licorice. It shows fabulous depth and richness backed up by serious, imposing tannins that suggest it has a long life. Ideally, the 2008 should be purchased by those who can be patient; it is not a wine for those seeking immediate gratification. The blend is 89% Cabernet Sauvignon, 7% Petit Verdot and 4% Malbec. Spottswoode: The utterly profound 2005 Cabernet Sauvignon Estate (95% Cabernet Sauvignon and 5% Cabernet Franc) will benefit from several years of bottle age, and should keep for 25-30 years. This extraordinary effort exhibits notes of blueberries, cassis, spring flowers, licorice, and forest floor. Beautifully pure and full-bodied with excellent overall harmony as well as superb purity, it reveals a Château Margaux-like personality. Drink: now-2030. 96 pts. (Robert Parker)

Robert Foley Claret: Foley’s flagship cuvee, the 2006 Claret (a blend of Bordeaux varietals) exhibits a dense ruby/purple hue as well as a sweet bouquet of creme de cassis, blackberries, spice, and charcoal. Hundred Acre: The 2005 Cabernet Sauvignon Ark Vineyard (the debut vintage of this cuvee) reveals an inky/blue/purple color as well as a sumptuous nose of loamy soil, licorice, graphite, espresso, sweet blackberries, and forest floor. It is a gorgeously proportioned, full-bodied effort with plenty of minerality as well as definition. Already accessible, this big wine should evolve for two decades. Drink: now-2008. 98 pts. "Ruby red color with some lightening at the rim. A lovely nose with tobacco, some leather, sour cherry and vanilla. Kirsch and soft cherry flavors on the palate, which is downright delicious. Some fine, tingly but soft tannins still there to support the excellent structure which includes balanced acidity. Long on charm with a good finish. At eight and a half years of age, this wine could still develop more but it's perfect now. 14% alch but no heat or clunkyness. Nice, chunky medium bodied texture. Drinking really well. La Gomerie: As usual, La Gomerie’s 2005 is a sexy, dense plum/purple-tinged effort. From a 7-acre, 32-year old site planted with 100% Merlot, it exhibits a sumptuous bouquet of white chocolate, roasted coffee, blackberries, black cherries, graphite, and toasty oak. This is a modern-styled, decadently rich St.-Emilion, but because of the vintage’s higher acidity and more tannic structure, this offering possesses a more classic framework than usual. A sensational wine, it should be drinkable in 3-4 years, and age beautifully for 15-20. Drink: now-2028. 95 pts. (review from 2008)

Clinet: We haven’t seen a Clinet this good since the late Jean-Michel Arcaute’s stunning duo of 1989 and 1990. This dense ruby/purple-tinged, exotic 2005 boasts soaring aromas of roasted herbs, plums, black currants, and caramelized chocolate. Savory, broad, and expansive with sensational purity, intensity, and length, this beauty possesses so much fruit and glycerin that it nearly hides the substantial tannins. Although performing exceptionally well at present, I suspect it will close down once it is put in a cold cellar. Drink: 2014-2030. 92 pts. (review from 2008)

La Gaffelier: The finest La Gaffeliere I have ever tasted, the prodigious 2005 boasts a dense ruby/purple color in addition to a flamboyant bouquet of lead pencil shavings, creme de cassis, blackberries, smoked meats, incense, and Asian spice. Fabulously deep and full-bodied as well as ethereal and exceptionally elegant for its explosive richness and intensity, its lightness of being reflects the vineyard’s sensational terroir. This succulent beauty appears to be approachable, but that belies some significant tannins. Drink: 2014-2030+. 96 pts. (review from 2008)

La Couspaude: An outstanding sleeper of the vintage, the 2005 may turn out to be one of the finest examples yet of this modern-styled St.-Emilion. Nicely oaked, ripe but not over-ripe, it possesses a deep ruby/purple color as well as sweet scents of pain grille, kirsch liqueur, and black currants. Ripe, medium to full-bodied, and rich, with good glycerin as well as freshness, and a long, heady finish, this succulent offering should be enjoyed over the next 10-15 years. Valandraud: This is one of the most riveting examples of Valandraud Jean-Luc Thunevin has made over the last fifteen years. Thunevin and his partner, Murielle Andraud (who has much of the responsibility for their brilliant Margaux, Marojallia), exhibit impeccable attention to detail, resulting in an inky/blue/purple-colored 2005 Valandraud boasting a sweet nose of melted chocolate, licorice, graphite, espresso roast, and copious quantities of black cherries and blackberries. Pure, layered, and full-bodied, with gorgeous integration of acidity, tannin, alcohol, and wood, this stunning effort will be drinkable in 7-8 years, and should keep for three decades. 1987: Deep garnet-brick. Mature Cabernet notes of warm cassis, dried herbs, mushrooms, black pepper and sweaty saddles. The medium to full bodied palate provides plenty of gamey, dried berry fruit with a medium level of silky tannins and medium to high acidity. Great balance. Long finish. Drink now-2013. 93 pts.

1994: This is an impressive effort from Opus One. The wine, a blend of 95% Cabernet Sauvignon, 2% Cabernet Franc, 2% Merlot, and 1% Malbec, possesses a dark ruby/purple color, followed by a generous, complex nose of lead pencil, toasty oak, violets, and black currants. In the mouth, there is a beautiful texture, soft, generous, low acid, full-bodied richness, and a stunningly proportioned, rich, intense finish. The influence of 18 months in new French oak casks gives the wine a subtle oaky note in addition to giving it excellent delineation. Drink: now-2017. 92 pts.

1995: Medium brick colour. Intense nose of dried blackberries and cherries laced with complex aromas of coffee grounds, tobacco leaf, cumin and soy. Nice concentration of mature berry and spice fruit balanced by medium to firm, slightly chewy tannins and medium to high acidity. A more structured style of Opus. Very long finish. Drink: now-2020. 93 pts.

Full-bodied, opulent, and succulent, this creamy-textured, luscious, low acid wine should continue to drink well for 10-12+ years. A sleeper vintage for proprietor Mitjavile’s beloved Tertre Roteboeuf, the 1988 has a deep plum/garnet color and a gorgeous nose of earth, underbrush, cherry cough syrup, licorice, and caramel. It is full-bodied, very pure, ripe, with loads of concentration, yet good definition and structure. No, it is not as dense as the 1989 nor as flamboyant and flashy as the 1990, but this is a classic Tertre Roteboeuf that should continue to drink well for at least another 10-15 years. 92 pts. Corton Charlemagne: The nose combines penetrating white flower fruit, green apple notes and trace of toast that give way to big, robust, masculine flavors offering excellent intensity, good fat and solid concentration plus a finish that oozes minerality. Puligny-Montrachet: Pretty, clean, fresh, attractively stony citrus notes lead to finely detailed, very crisp flavors underpinned by snappy acidity. There is a lovely racy aspect here and I especially like the elegance and finesse on the finish. Palmer: A complex bouquet of earth, blue and black fruits, licorice, incense, and spice box is followed by a round, silky, voluptuous wine that falls just short of achieving the depth and richness found in such recent vintages as 2000, 2005, 2006, and 2008. A very strong, fully mature effort, its balance, purity, depth, and texture suggest it will provide plenty of pleasure over the next 10-12 years. Anticipated maturity: 2009-2021. 92 pts. Latour a Pomerol: This loosely knit, somewhat superficial wine revealing complex notes of spice box, roasted herbs, caramels, sweet red cherries, and slightly blacker fruit. Medium-bodied with plenty of amber at the edge, it has very little staying power, depth, and finish. An underachiever in this vintage, it is a fully mature Pomerol that should be consumed. 88 pts. Brane-Cartenac: In a blind tasting of the 1982s in the fall of 2002, this wine put on its best performance ever. Some of the objectionable, dirty aromas that had been such a flaw early seem to have taken a backseat to the herbaceous-scented sweet cherry and plum-like fruit. The wine is medium-bodied, shows considerable amber at the edge, and still has a somewhat earthy, mushroomy, even manure-like aroma, but it is not nearly as intense as it once was. 82 pts. Leoville Barton: Still backward (frustratingly so), this wine shows a very dark ruby color with a hint of pink at the rim. The aromatics are beginning to emerge from just pure fruit-driven notes to secondary characteristics. Sweet earth, truffle, black currant, underbrush, and licorice emerge with coaxing. In the mouth, the wine is powerful, dense, with high tannin., impressive concentration, and a formidable, sort of old-style personality. Anticipated maturity: 2006-2030. 91+ pts. (Robert Parker)

Dow: Amazing aromas of lilac, violet, crushed blueberry and mineral that turn to black pepper and spices follow through to a full-bodied, medium-sweet palate, with a long, chewy finish. I'm just going to write it down the way it happened in the parking lot of Late Harvest Kitchen:

Chuck: I've got something interesting here.
T.J.: What's that?
Chuck: These were put directly into my hands by Madame de Lencquesaing at the chateau.
T.J.: You're kidding.
Chuck: They came straight from the chateau cellar. That was in 1988 and they have been in my cellar ever since.

When we consider old wines, we have to consider provenance. We have to ask ourselves "Where have these bottles been all their life?" Here, the provenance is impeccable. 10 out of 10 experts would agree that the best place for a bottle of Pichon Lalande to be is in the chateau cellar, and 9 out of 10 experts would agree that the next best place for a bottle of Pichon Lalande to be is in Chuck's cellar (the 10^th expert said "in my stomach", so I discount that answer).

Rayne Vigneau: This has a rounded nose of apple-blossom, honey, peach and a touch of elderflower. Good definition although it could do with more vivacity. The palate is medium-bodied, good acidity with a certain delicacy and sophistication to it. Lively and zesty towards the finish. Crisp, minerally towards the finish that is streamlined and economical. Good length. Anticipated maturity: 2010-2025. (91-93) pts. (Robert Parker)

Doisy-Vedrines: This has a much more precocious nose than other 2007s: honey, apricot, peach, a touch of spice, mandarin and a soupcon of warm alcohol, in other words, quintessential Doisy-Vedrines. The palate is full-bodied, viscous on the entry and maintaining good balance, fine acidity cutting through the rich honey, quince and apricot fruit, with great definition and vitality towards the botrytis-rich finish. There is real pedigree here, and the 2007 surely represents their best wines since the triumvirate of 88, 89, and 90. This is a benchmark Doisy-Vedrines. Anticipated maturity: 2015-2045. 95 pts. Arista's First Estate Pinot Noir

Arista Winery's first estate Pinot Noir is the 2009 Two Birds Estate Vineyard Pinot Noir. The inaugural release marks the culmination of several years of patient planning and meticulous care of the vineyard. Al and Janis McWilliams purchased the 36 acre property in 2004 & oversaw the plantings of the four separate estate vineyards over the past six years. After purchasing the estate, they carefully studied their site with a team of scientists to accurately determine soil chemistry and composition. The conclusion was reached that there was such diverse soil makeup that instead of planting a single vineyard they should break the property into four separate vineyards to capture the uniqueness of the terroir.

With a solid understanding of the soil composition, they were able to make the critical decisions of selecting the various rootstocks and clones for each block. Each vineyard's rootstock was planted and allowed to grow for a year to establish the root system before their highly skilled vineyard team grafted the specific clones of Pinot Noir to the rootstock. Once the grafting was complete, a few more years of patience was required before the first harvest from the estate. Each of the four vineyards are a unique combination of soil, microclimate and clonal selections of Pinot Noir that come together to create a clear expression of the terroir.

The first of the four vineyards to produce wine is the Two Birds Vineyard. This vineyard is approximately 3 acres planted and has a Southeast facing slope. It is planted to Pommard, Swan, and Calera and only produced 270 cases for its inaugural vintage in 2009.

As the wine opens up, wild cherry and plum leap from the glass. In the background distinct notes of cinnamon, vanilla and hints of peppermint are apparent. Velvety tannins layered with concentrated flavors of cassis, plum and rich ripe berry flavors create an enticing combination of flavor and texture on the palate. The 2009 Two Birds Estate Pinot Noir is enjoyable now but will continue to gain depth and complexity with 6-8 years in the cellar.

The wine, a blend of 95% Cabernet Sauvignon, 2% Cabernet Franc, 2% Merlot, and 1% Malbec, possesses a dark ruby/purple color, followed by a generous, complex nose of lead pencil, toasty oak, violets, and black currants. In the mouth, there is a beautiful texture, soft, generous, low acid, full-bodied richness, and a stunningly proportioned, rich, intense finish. What we have here, in addition to some of the best Pinot Noir in the world, is the very first bottle of 2003 Bonnes Mares filled at the Domaine, and the third bottle of Musigny. Bonnes Mares: Boasting a nose of great ripeness and freshness, the 2003 Bonnes Mares offers aromas of waxy black fruits and spices. Medium to full-bodied, it resembles liquid silk in both its attack and mid-palate. Luxurious and sensual, this highly expressive wine coats the palate with black cherries and dark raspberries whose effects linger in its tannin-packed, slightly dry finish. Musigny: (There were only 14 barrels produced instead of the usual 30-35) Unquestionably one of the glories of the vintage, the 2003 Musigny Vieilles Vignes brings forth a highly boisterous nose of spices, violets, roses, plums, blueberries, and black cherries. Deep, powerful, graceful, concentrated, and sensually textured, it slathers the mouth with plums, blueberries, and cherries. Notes of mocha are intermingled with licorice in its exquisitely long finish. This noble wine is crammed with tannin, yet it is sweet and ripe. Anticipated maturity: 2010-2025+. 98 pts. 2004: has a beautiful dense ruby/purple color, a luscious nose of black fruits intermixed with crushed rocks, sweet jammy strawberries and chocolate, and a long finish. 2005: a beauty, with dark ruby/purple color and a big sweet nose of tobacco leaf intermixed with black currant, black cherry, new saddle leather, and white chocolate. 2006: A dense purple color in addition to plenty of creme de cassis, crushed rock, blueberry, and brioche-like notes are found in this full-bodied Cabernet. Beautifully rich, gamy, earthy aromas framing big, rich, round and relatively elegant flavors in the context of the vintage that display notes of leather, spice and remarkable complexity with a gorgeous velvety texture on the still tight finish. This is a prodigious effort. Given recent perplexing offerings from this producer, it is amazing how phenomenal Ponsot's wines can be. The 1990 exhibits a deep, dense, murky, ruby color as well as an explosive nose of gravel, spring flowers, and black and red fruits. Extremely rich and full-bodied, with spectacular concentration, an unctuous texture, and an extraordinarily long finish, this wine remains youthful, but its fat and succulent texture are hard to resist. Caymus: The wine offers a saturated, dark purple color, and a rich, spicy, oaky nose backed up by generous quantities of jammy blackcurrants. Ripe, highly extracted, and full-bodied, with copious amounts of sweet tannin and layers of fruit, this is a knock-out, flamboyantly-styled Cabernet. 94 pts. (Robert Parker)

Montelena: Tremendous complexity, depth and richness, with sharply focused layers of currant, anise, cedar, tobacco and spice, firming on the finish, where the tannins are soft enough for the wine to be enjoyed now. 94 pts. (Wine Spectator)

Dunn: the 1990s exhibit exceptional richness, depth, power, and ferocious tannins. The 1990 Cabernet Sauvignon-Napa is an opaque, awesomely concentrated, tannic wine with little aromatic development. Possesses a tell-tale mineral, cassis, flowery nose, and rich, full-bodied, dense, highly extracted, tannic personalities. 93 pts. (Robert Parker)

Beringer: Unlike more recent offerings, the 1990 came from three Napa Valley parcels, the Chabot Vineyard on the east side of Napa, Beringer’s Home Vineyard in St. Helena and the Bancroft Vineyard on Howell Mountain. The 1990 is fully mature, but it appears to have another decade of aging left (this review is from 2011). It exhibits terrific fruit intensity with lots of plum sauce, black currants, roasted meats, cedar and cassis. Full-bodied and quite mature (it reveals some lightening at the edge), it is in no danger of drying out or declining. 94 pts. (Robert Parker)

Spottswoode: Still young and firm, this delivers spicy plum and chocolate flavors; it's polished, balanced and intense. 90 pts. (Wine Spectator)

Hermitage La Chapelle Artwork

This evocative wall hanging features a bottle of 1907 Hermitage La Chapelle. Wines grown on the mound of granite known as Hermitage on the east bank of the Rhône south of Lyons have been famous for so long that they were mentioned by both Pliny and Martial – centuries before vines grew in Bordeaux. Paul Jaboulet Aîné’s bottling of Hermitage La Chapelle, named after the small stone chapel supposedly built as a retreat for a 13^th century knight who fell in love with this sun-baked hill high above the river Rhône, is the wine that made their reputation.

A handful of producers make the Rhône’s best wines from this vineyard, but Jaboulet owns one-fifth of the vines in the Hermitage and their La Chapelle is regarded by most to be the greatest Hermitage wine produced when you consider all of the vintages.

Those vintages include the legendary 1961, regarded by many to be the finest Rhône wine made in the lifetime of anyone living today.

This artwork will conjure memories of those storied wines when hung in your home or wine cellar.

“The ultimate “garage” winery, this operation’s back alley warehouse looks like a set scene from the movie Mad Max, but inside are the elixirs of dreams. Despite Krankl’s already lofty reputation, he continues to fine tune and build more nuances and complexity into his wines without sacrificing their intrinsic exuberance, purity, intensity, and individuality. There are four sweet wines being made, but, unfortunately, the Mr. K. series will end because of the premature and tragic death of the renowned Alois (Luis) Kracher, the genius behind so many extraordinary sweet wines from Austria, and a partner with Krankl. In a year filled with some extraordinary tastings (2005 Bordeaux, 2007 Southern Rhones to come), this tasting at the so-called “garage d’or” on the back streets of Ventura stands along side the wine-tasting/dinner at the Great Wall of China as one of the two wine-tasting events of the year.”

Straw Man: Even more remarkable is the 2005 Mr. K. Marsanne Vin de Paille The Straw Man. One-hundred percent Marsanne from the Beckmen Vineyard, with remarkably low alcohol (7.5%), a whopping 392 grams of residual sugar per liter, and exceptional acidity (6.4 grams of acid per liter), this is one of the most singular sweet wines I have ever tasted. The individualistic, prodigious sweet wines are the products of meticulous attention to detail, obsessive harvesting requirements, and amazing vinifications and upbringings. They are unbelievable elixirs, and this one is as complex and intense as any sweet wine made in the world. Noble Man: Made from 100% Chardonnay from the Alban Vineyard, the 2005 Mr. K. The Noble Man possesses 235 grams of residual sugar per liter as well as exceptional acid levels. This incredibly rich, sweet white is almost like the Quintessence bottlings from Alsace’s Domaine Weinbach. Its mind-boggling purity, balance, intensity, and sweetness are balanced by the wine’s zesty acidity. An amazing achievement fashioned from 100% botrytised fruit, it will keep for 20 or more years. Las Cases: This great estate (separated from Latour's finest vineyard by a mere ten feet), run with extraordinary passion and brilliance by Michel Delon, has once again turned in superlative efforts - wines that are unquestionably of first-growth quality. The 1994 is one of the top ten wines of the vintage. It possesses a degree of opulence, fat, and intensity that is rarely found in a 1994 Medoc. The opaque purple color is followed by extraordinarily pure, cassis, vanillin, and spice aromas that will develop into something even more complex. The wine is full-bodied, with layers of highly extracted, well-balanced and well-defined fruit and structure. Anticipated maturity: 2002-2025. 93 pts. (Robert Parker)

Montrose: An opaque purple color suggests a wine of considerable intensity. One of the most successful 1994s of the northern Medoc, the wine's closed aromatics offer jammy black fruits, plums, spice, and earth. On the palate, there is impressive extract, purity, and copious amounts of sweet blackcurrant fruit nicely balanced by moderate yet ripe tannin. Rauzan-Segla: Fabulous aromas of vanilla, toasted oak and fruit, ultrafine tannins and a long, caressing finish. All in finesse. From a winery on the fast track to the top. 90 pts. (Wine Spectator)

Troplong: Best Troplong ever. Impressive dark color and loads of mineral, berry and spice aromas lead to a full-bodied and very tannic (though the tannins are fine) mouthful. Very closed and tight now, this needs time to come around. Try in 2000. 92 pts. (Wine Spectator)

Gary Brackett, middle linebacker for the Indianapolis Colts, stands at 5’11’’ and weighs 235lbs. He was born on May 23, 1980 in Glassboro, New Jersey, and attended Rutgers University. Gary Brackett joined the Indianapolis Colts in 2003, and is currently in his 9th season. He has served as the Colts’ Defensive Captain since 2006, and was part of the Super Bowl XLI Champion team.

Often the recipient of recognition for his sportsman-like conduct and dedication to the community, he has been honored with the Ed Block Courage Award, Walter Payton Man of the Year, and the Pro Football Weekly Arthur S. Arkush Humanitarian Award. He has even gone so far as to start his own foundation. Aged in 100% new oak, this cuvee reveals a very singular character. If California vineyards were ever classified a la French sites, this Rutherford terroir would be judged a grand cru.”

2005: The 2005 Cabernet Sauvignon goes from strength to strength. Beautiful notes of crushed rocks, white flowers, and blue, red, and black fruits form a complex, compelling set of aromatics. The wine reveals superb richness, a full-bodied mouthfeel, excellent integration of acidity, wood, and tannin, and a terrific finish. This beautiful 2005 is already displaying some secondary nuances, and it should drink splendidly well for 2-3 decades. Anticipated maturity: 2008-2038. 96 pts. (Robert Parker)

2006: A gorgeous young wine, fresh, pure, rich and vibrant. Complex, layered, deep and persistent, offering tiers of ripe, juicy cherry, currant, plum and berry, with touches of cedar, sage and black olive. Turns silky smooth and elegant on the finish, where the flavors are delicate and detailed. Anticipated maturity: 2009-2020. 96 pts. (Wine Spectator)

2007: One would expect this great vineyard to hit the heights, given what Mother Nature provided producers, but the seamlessness, the opulence, the extraordinary purity, the multi-dimensional mouthfeel, and the vibrant, even dramatic, floral-infused creme de cassis fruit intermixed with hints of blueberry and forest floor is provocative. In the mouth, there is not a rough edge in a medium to full-bodied, perfectly harmonious, sensationally concentrated wine, with gloriously sweet but substantial tannins as well as prodigious purity and singularity. It reveals a liqueur of crushed rocks intermixed with a smorgasbord of spring flower, blueberry, creme de cassis, and assorted blue, black, and red fruit characteristics. It also possesses extraordinary concentration, but what sets it apart is the fragrant aromatics combined with uncommon purity and elegance for such a full-bodied, massively concentrated wine. Its perfect balance suggests it can be drunk at a relatively young age, but it should easily evolve over 30-35 years. Congratulations to all involved! Anticipated maturity: 2009-2044. 100 pts. The 14^th Annual Elegant Vintages International Wine Auction, presented by Fifth Third Private Bank will be Sat., March 17, 2012 at the Conrad Hotel, Indianapolis. This elegant, black-tie optional event benefits the Indianapolis Zoo and help supports all the great work that the Zoo does.

The highlight of the event is a live auction featuring world-renowned auctioneer, David Reynolds. Auction lots include rare wines, original artwork, private dinners, designer jewelry, interactive Zoo excursions and much more.

The Turkle & Associates and Phases Skin Care & Laser Center VIP Patron’s Reception from 5-6:00 p.m. before the auction is always a favorite among guests, as is the exquisite wines paired with the multi-course gourmet dinner catered by the Conrad Indianapolis.

Tickets are $300 for Connoizooer tickets which includes all Patrons’ benefits, premium seating, and upgraded wines with dinner. Patron tickets are $200 which includes attendance to the Turkle & Associates and Phases Skin Care & Laser Center VIP Patrons’ Reception, upgraded wine and champagne during cocktail hour and the first chance to bid on silent auction items. Guest tickets are available for $150. Table packages for groups of 10 are available for $2,000 and $3,000 and include the opportunity to enjoy wines from your private collection at your table.
